Welcome to the inaugural Mayor’s Cup for Amateur Boxing.

Over the past year or so, the great joy of amateur boxing and the opportunities it offers have really sprung to my attention. As a sport, it is moving in the right direction. More young people are taking it up; more champions are being produced. It is part of the fabric of London life and, through the establishment of the Mayor’s Cup, I am extremely honoured to have been welcomed into the fold.

London’s network of fine amateur boxing clubs – and the people who train in them – embody all that is wonderful about sport. They are overflowing with effort, discipline, respect and comradeship.

I hope that, in the years ahead, existing clubs continue to thrive and new ones are born. Alongside this, I hope that the Mayor’s Cup will flourish as an occasion for London’s young boxers to come together and meet in fair competition.

The eventual winner will certainly have earned his triumph. Maybe he will one day go on to emulate Amir Khan or James deGale as a Great British Olympian?
